About the book
Nursing school prepares you to pass the board exam and become a licensed nurse. This high-stakes exam is an outcome indicator for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of a nursing program. Not only is the standardized test an indicator of program quality, but it also plays a critical role in the accreditation of nursing programs. For example, a nursing program may lose accreditation, funding, and student enrollment if the annual NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) pass rates consistently fall below a certain threshold. It makes sense that some nursing schools proudly display the recent exam pass rates on their websites and buildings. However, a nursing program does not prepare you to work with other healthcare professionals, limited support, complicated family dynamics, hostile colleagues, or navigate the complex terrain of patient care.
As a new grad or newly licensed nurse transitioning to practice, you’re entrusted with the lives of sick patients with complex needs, and you’re expected to deliver care tailored to meet those needs on time and safely. Suddenly, you realize the stakes are high, and the tasks seem overwhelming!
“Nursing Gems for New Grads” opens with real-life clinical scenarios and shows the reader how to successfully navigate the rugged terrain of patient care. It takes you on a journey from applying for your first nursing job and attending an interview to orientation, training, and becoming a competent nurse. This book:
- Attempts to bridge the gap between nursing school and on-the-job training.
- Contains valuable tips and checklists to help you prioritize tasks, effectively receive and deliver handoffs, and document defensively.
- Highlights true-life scenarios to help promote critical thinking and avoid common medical mistakes.
- Outlines effective ways to immerse yourself in the care environment and work harmoniously with your preceptor, peers, doctors, and other healthcare team members.
This pocket-sized book is a must-read for nursing students and new nurses.
